Abstract
The enigmatic episode of Cipus could be interpreted as the aition of the recusatio imperii. It has its proper place in the series of allusions to the various aspects of imperial succession in the Metamorphoses. Illuminating are its connections with apotheoses and the other two preceding aitia.
