In current years, the term «illiberal democracy» has been adopted to indicate those countries in which a process of democratic deconsolidation is ongoing. The expression is not a new: the first aim of this contribution is to review the main variations with which it is used. As you can see, if, on the one hand, it is used in empirical studies dedicated to democratization processes, on the other hand, according to a convincing theoretical tradition, it is conceptually wrong because liberal democracy is the only possible system of democracy. However, the emergence of illiberal political projects, especially in some European countries, has renewed the theoretical debate on what democracy is and what its relationship with liberalism is.
