Abstract
This essay examines a series of proposals for critical edition (some already published) of Dante’s masterpiece following the Commedia secondo l’antica vulgata edited by Giorgio Petrocchi (1966-1967), in particular, the reconstructions of Federico Sanguineti, Giorgio Inglese and Paolo Trovato. Emphasis is given to the nature of transmission of the manuscripts, hypothetical descriptions of the archetype, and the applicability of a strictly lachmannian approach to a heavily contaminated tradition. Examples of the usefulness of new reflections on the collation of witnesses are also presented.
