Abstract
The chapter shows how multilingualism, once a central issue in political studies, has come to be seen as a marginal issue by political scientists during the last decades. This point is made that the spread of English as global lingua franca is a 'political' phenomenon that deserves more attention. The disadvantages that originate from the privileged status acquired by English. such the inequalities and conflicts of interest between groups with differentiated access to it or the economic, social and cultural effects on the collective good of cultural and intellectual diversity, should become the object of comparative research and public debate.
