Abstract

This article contextualizes and translates the entry about Ḥātim aṭ-Ṭāʾī, the paragon of generosity in Arab culture, contained in the "Book of poetry and poets" by Ibn Qutayba. The figure of Ḥātim aṭ-Ṭāʾī, who inspired Boccaccio and Goethe, not to mention Saadi and the One Thousand and One Nights, is contrasted with the treatment of hospitality in the hadith, where this virtue is highly prized but also rationalized: "Hospitality lasts three days; anything after that is charity".
