Abstract
Empathy is a complex multi-dimensional concept that has emotional, cognitive and behavioral dimensions and represents a key element of the helping relationship in social work. Despite its importance, although past research has examined empathy in the helping professions, few studies have concentrated specifically on social work. Through a qualitative exploratory research, carried
out through the use of an interview with a sample of 50 professionals working in municipal social services in Veneto Region, this article focuses on social workers’ representations of empathy. The research results highlight the three dimensions of empathy: while the emotional one is given, cognitive and behavioral dimensions can be learned, cultivated and supported through professional tools (training, supervision, teamwork, etc.).
