Abstract
The essay looks into the history of Sunday schools , created in Milan soon after Unification. The initiative was urged by the Commission of study, an institution that wanted to provide professional education to younger and older women already in paid employment. These schools, which were quite successful, lasted until the second postwar period and represented a concrete opportunity of social improvement and emancipation for the lower and middle classes in the town.
