Italian sociologists have been investigating the growing presence of foreign students in the education system for about a decade, but they don’t give particular attention to educational policies. The aim of the present article is to present and discuss some of the most significant studies focusing on the education policies for foreign students, as well as to give a picture of the current European and international scenario. This will be made through an analysis of the relationship between policies and practice which will highlight critical issues and future prospects of the Italian education system.
