Abstract
Some studies and researches have dealt with the agency of unaccompanied and
separate children (UASCs) recently, focusing on their right to education, that
was previously considered a secondary issue for minors with a migration project
similar to the one of adults. Within this interpretative framework, the agency of
minors shows that they bear many resources and skills in the learning path. The
essay presents the results of a qualitative research promoted by the ISMU Foundation
in 2018. The research aims at reconstructing the biographical and educational
trajectories of the UASCs and their journey to and through Italy, from
Sicily to Milan. These pathways intersect with the participation of children in
different training contexts (welcoming centers, CPIAs, VET centers, secondary
schools). The crucial role of educators, school leaders, and teachers emerges.
School professionals are involved in a sort of negotiation process during the educational
integration and they mediate the right to education for these minors,
even outlining possible alternatives to develop their potentials.
