Abstract
Southern Africa has returned to the centre of global interest due to the difficult process of democratisation and the attempts of Russia and China to enter the region. The author reconstructs the political development of Southern Africa from the first European settlements, which has given the area a set of characteristics unique on the continent. Colonial history has left behind deep economic inequalities and societies defined by ethnic and cultural diversity, in which the presence of white and Asian minorities continues to fuel the debate on pluralism and multiculturalism, while historical ties with the West and the Indian Ocean basin maintain an open door to the rest of the world.
