Abstract
The great recession hits Italian unemployment rate especially for the youth component of the labour force, and this characteristic of the Italian youth labour market raises important concerns. The overall Italian unemployment rate rose in 2008-2009, decreased in the first months of 2010 signalling a recovery but at the end of the year started to grow again reaching a historical high of 12.4% in 2013. What is surprising is the different behaviours of the youth unemployment rate; the series for individuals aged 15–29 show that the youth unemployment rate increased by 10 percentage points between 2008 and 2012 from 15.4 to 25.4%, one of the highest rates in Europe, and the situation is even worst for youth aged from 15 to 24 years.
