L’Abbé P.-J. Rousselot: dalla dialettologia alla fonetica sperimentale

In handbooks of the History of Linguistics all over the world, the name of Abbot Rousselot appears as the uncontested founder of experimental phonetics. It must not be forgotten, however, that he was first and foremost a dialectologist, and from the study of the dialects of his native region, where he proposed innovative methods for solving well-known problems, he arrived at the physiology laboratories of his time, in particular, the one headed by Marey in Paris. This was suggested to him by Gaston Paris, the famous Romanist professor who supervised his doctoral thesis. Rousselot, with Gilliéron, was a pioneer in French dialectology and was recognised as such by Cerlogne. In this collection, his contacts with the Val d'Aoste are examined, including the "philological excursions" in this Italian Alpine region and his exchange of letters with Abbot Cerlogne.
