Abstract
The paper is about economic solidarity, asking the question whether solidarity is a choice or a fundamental social institution. We argue that solidarity can arise as a non- cooperative solution of agents acting out of empathy and for the purpose of intergenerational bequest, of which we analyze some economic consequences.
