Abstract
In this paper we discuss the thesis of the “egoicity” of indexicals. According to this thesis indexicals can be correctly interpreted only in the original utterance context. The analysis of reported speech seems to refute the above-mentioned thesis. Since direct, free direct and free indirect speech contain at least two deictic centres, indexical comprehension cannot depend on the assumption of the same point of view on the world the speaker of the original utterance has.
