Abstract
In the history of the Italian school, the coexistence in the same class of males and females, as well as their separation, was determined more by economic and cultural reasons, than by pedagogical considerations. Identifying these causes, the paper briefly reconstructs the co-education path in the primary and secondary school, from Italian Unity to the second half of the Twentieth century.
