Abstract
The contribution traces the history of the Acting School of the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, founded by Giorgio Strehler, based on interviews with teachers and first-hand documentation. The foundation of the School responded to new needs for the transmission of the theatrical experience linked to a period of reflection on the profession of the actor and on the function of theater in the society that animated the Italian culture of the 70s and 80s of the last century. The essay also identifies the models that inspired Strehler to plan his School (in particular Jacques Copeau), and illustrates the didactic articulation and the peculiarities with respect to other similar schools.
