Abstract
In the Eastern Vatican policy, the Balkans represented a historic challenge. The confrontation with the Orthodox Church represented for Rome a religious and a cultural problem. Progressively, Rome has changed its attitude towards Slavic Christians, from unionism to ecumenism.
