The recent reforms that have concerned Italian school system and the “work in progress” about pre-service teachers education provide new stresses for reflecting upon school-based research and, in particular, lead to wonder about the most appropriate training methods to promote the development of methodological skills. The paper deals with this issue moving from the analysis and critical evaluation of a training device put in action at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. Data analysis shows that research competence is recognized both as a resource for improving teaching practice quality and as a constitutive dimension of teacher professional identity.
