La polisemia dell'aggettivo 'immobile' nelle opere di Manzoni

The article analyses the use of the adjective “immobile” inside Manzoni’s works. From the different variants of Il Cinque Maggio, in Coro d’Ermengarda, in Natale 1833 to the comparison between Fermo e Lucia and I Promessi Sposi, is quite evident the polysemous use of the word “immobile” and, above all, the semantic development of this adjective: it can have a simple anthropological meaning of physical immobility towards events, a theological sense of inscrutability of Divine Providence and an existential value of immobility of human beings facing troubles and sufferings
