Abstract
The article tells the story of the foundation of philosophy of language as a discipline in Italian university system. It reports three interviews with Tullio De Mauro, Andrea Bonomi and Umberto Eco and discusses the reasons why historical linguistics on one hand, philology on the other hand first, aesthetics later on determined a certain delay in the beginnings of philosophy of language in Italy, if compared to other countries, but at the same time its pecularities.
