Abstract
The idea of human dignity is considered, especially with regard to the principles currently regulating the Italian prison system and to the reality of jails in that country. The condition of the convict is deemed "archetypical" of the many disability which prevent people from having recognized their dignity and thus worthy a greater attention from the part of institutions and common people. Referring to a well-known decision of the Italian Constitutional Court (364/1988) one meaning of dignity is particularly highlighted, namely the idea tha it consists in the ability to access knowledge which be adequate to the actual enjoyment of human rights
