Abstract

The Sacca di Goito graveyard: updates on the late 4th to early 5th century phase In addition to an extensive Lombard period cemetery, the archaeological excavations carried out between 1990 and 1993 at Sacca di Goito (MN) brought to light an older burial ground that can be dated to the late 4th and early 5th century. The thirty-eight burials of this phase are placed at a certain distance from each other, with a north-south orientation; around the skeletons blackish stains were sometimes visible, produced by the disintegration of organic material, probably traces of coffins. The grave goods include clothing accessories, personal ornaments, metal artefacts and glass, pottery and bronze vessels. In the context of contemporary Italian archaeological evidence, the presence of brooches associated with the archaeological cultures of Černjachov-Sîntana de Mureş and mirrors with pierced grips linked to the traditions of the Alano-Sarmatian people is exceptional. Other finds indicate the use of Italic manufactured articles and the acquisition of local customs. In some of the male burials there are also objects that seem to be military in character.
