Abstract
The paper deals with the ethical and legal challenges posed by data, algorithms and artificial intelligence, the undisputed protagonists of the present and the future of humanity. Data constitute the raw material and algorithms are the engine capable of extracting value; the “heart” of artificial intelligence solutions lies precisely in the enormous amount of data processed by efficient algorithms. After having examined the characteristics and purposes of the use of these technologies, the analysis focuses on the different legal and ethical dimensions involved, on the protection of the person and on the protection of individual and collective rights. In this regard, the contribution examines the main problems and proposes suitable instruments to deal with them and to design a human-centric governance. In the conclusion future scenarios are outlined for a more effective protection of the person and of the entire society through the law.
