Abstract
Individualism and selfishness are the evils of this time. But do we really know what a community is? It is not enough to be with the others, or share ideas, aims, interests. The selfishness of the communities (even religious communities) is far more shattering than the individuals’ selfishness. Community is subjected to a double risk: to put its own leading role before the witness for truth and welcome; to be doubtful between condemnation and complicity towards the city of the men. Witnessing is the same as being. However, the typical elements of the community look like the scattered grains of a broken string: they no longer recognise each other, and bring misunderstandings and ambiguities. On the contrary it is necessary to knot the thread again joining witness and welcome, places and democracy, authority and participation, presence, hope, prophecy. The comparison prefers philosophical texts (Nietzsche, Gadamer, Derrida, Heidegger, Buber, Ricoeur, Mounier, Marcel, Lévinas…). Bibliography.
