Abstract
The aim of this article is to propose a mindful remark on reputation, fame
and celebrity topics in Europe during 18th century, using as starting
point the case of the Swiss physician Théodore Tronchin (1709-1781).
Born in Geneve, he was educated in London and in Leyden as pupil of
the eminent Boerhaave; in this stage of his career, he gained a valuable
experience in treatments for fighting smallpox, that accrued after the
inoculation of the offspring of Duke of Orleans in 1756, making him a
celebrity across Europe. Digging deeper into his life, will be unfolded
the dynamics behind the progression from reputation to glory passing by
celebrity. Such research will be supported by different sources: private
correspondence, sociability and newspaper articles.
