Abstract
The regulation of the relations between the State and religious faiths through\r\nagreements and memoranda of understanding (namely, bilateral regulation) is rooted\r\nin the Catholic Church historical tradition of so-called Concordati – also embodied in\r\nthe Italian Constitution (at Article 7, par. 2 and Article 8, par. 3). The discipline concerned\r\nwith the study of ecclesiastical institutions and the economic relationships\r\nwith religious faiths relates to this context. However, the increasing development of\r\nreligious pluralism in society, often heterogeneous from Italian religious traditions,\r\nhas created a crisis for this form of legislation.\r\nThis contribution analyzes the potential innovative development of normative\r\nsources focusing in particular on non-religious activities of ecclesiastical institutions,\r\nthe forms of funding for religious faiths and the impact of “bilateral agreements” as\r\nthe main ways of regulating this strategic sector of religious freedom.
