Abstract
The article traces the history of Austen's representation through a short survey of the early biographies and collections of letters. The results of this analysis will underline the importance of reading the correspondence in the context of the entire work of Austen. Letters and novels can be considered as two separate registers, reflecting a dialectical relationship between the public and the private. Both of them form the fabric of Austen's world.
