Abstract

The article deals with the interpretation of the phraseological pattern [SKY and EARTH and WATER / SEA] for [ COSMOS] which occurs in the Old Norse poem Vǫluspá (3): it is argued for an interpretation of the phrase as a merism of structure [A + [B + C]], an analysis that finds support in the lexicon and phraseology of Latin, Greek, Hittite and Armenian, among others.
