Abstract
The volume is the outcome of an extensive investigation (historical data and interpretative analysis) relating to the presence of immigrants and foreigners in Italian cities and territories¬ between the late Middle Ages and the early 19th century. Wide-ranging flows, regional and local mobility, economic, sociocultural and religious practices – the identities of nations and foreign groups – are the subject of overall reviews on the Italian framework and more specific analyses on cosmopolitical metropolises (Venice, Milan, Rome).
It reconstructs a crowded landscape that corroborates the typological variety and the large numerousness of the immigrants in many Italian cities during the long Early Modern Age, vs the stereotypical image of migration as an increasingly important phenomenon only from the late 19th to the 20th centuries.
