Abstract
The collection of essays in Umberto Eco's Apocalittici e integrati is still able to offer noteworthy stimuli to contemporary media studies. This paper analyses one particular essay, that of "The Myth of Superman" (translated in English in The Role of the Reader), in order to focus upon three main aspects that seem crucial to understand both its current and historical value. Fistly, the uncommon methodological choice. By comparing and relating comics and ancient myths, Eco is able to go beyond traditional perspectives on cultural value, highlighting the continuuities and disruptions in popular culture narrations, starting from Greek tragedy, passing through modern novels to get to mass serialisation.
