Abstract
The essay deals, for the first time in an exhaustive manner and with numerous unpublished documents, with the passage of Margaret of Austria through Milan, on her way to Madrid to marry the King of Spain Philip III. In the section under my competence, entitled "The Stay", the events arranged by the Spanish governor to entertain the sovereign during her long stay in the city are analyzed. Through descriptions and letters from ambassadors, the frequent disagreements that arose between the Milanese organisers and the Habsburg court are highlighted, and an original political interpretation is offered of the "Play of the Superb King" staged by the Jesuits in the theatre-hall of the Ducal Palace. Finally, an accurate architectural reconstruction is dedicated to the theatre-hall of the Ducal Palace, built for the occasion on the initiative of the Constable Velasco and named after Margaret herself, based on the surviving descriptions and on unpublished iconographic documentation.
