Abstract
The essay traces the history of relations between the papacy and the Normans in the 11th century. After a conflictual beginning, culminating in the battle of Civitate, both were interested in normalising relations since the reforming papacy needed the military support of the Normans and the latter could obtain from the Roman Church the legitimisation of their conquests in southern Italy.
