Abstract
The use of private financing for welfare interventions is increasingly widespread. It is considered as an alternative to overcome the difficulties of the Italian Social Protection System. This alternative hasn't the status of a new paradigm. Nevertheless, the echo that it has having in the scientific and political arena is evident. The objective of the chapter is to understand the reasons for this success and investigate ideas, values and visions of welfare that underlies it, critically reviewing the main positions that animate the academic debate.
