Abstract
In a short poem in honor of the Longobard king Cunincpert (ante 700 A.D.) his royal family is celebrated as of European stock. It appear to be the first instance in the Middle Ages for Europe to be considered a geographical area with a cultural identity, which substitutes the Roman Empire
