Abstract
The paper first focuses on Giovanni Battista Nicola’s analysis of the distinction between Political science, Political philosophy, and the Art of government, with a direct link to Antonio Rosmini’s approach to the study of politics. Based on these arguments, the aim of this article is to provide a reflection around the concepts of Superiority and Inferiority present in some pages of the Politica Prima written by the Roveretan. Based on the description of the unequal nature
of society, these concepts justify the idea that it should be the few – and with selected qualities – should rule over the many. This is an early outline of the theory of elites, according to which a minority rules over the majority: one of the regularities on which the scientific study of politics was based in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. Rediscovering this suggestion of Rosmini’s thought can help to overcome the current crisis of political representation.
