Abstract
As Edward Kenney has pointed out, Ovid makes the most of the expressive resources of compounds within his poetic
production, yet without departing from the widespread practice of other Augustans. However, the compounds can also have in themselves an immediate allusive value: particular attention is given to the case of Empedocles, who is predominantly made present through and within Ovid’s complex relationship with Lucretius.
