Abstract
The monographic section of this journal issue features contributions from Italian, Japanese, and Canadian scholars working in the fields of economics and history. Their contributions aim to analyze the relationship between animals, the economy, and institutions. Specifically, the issue presents several national case studies (Italy, Germany, Great Britain) where a "horse question" emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries—examining how institutions and private entities managed the production of horses and stallions, which were essential both for the military and for agriculture, yet with distinct and non-overlapping characteristics.
This issue is recommended for readers interested in economic history, agricultural history, and military history.
