Abstract
This paper focuses on the analysis of the EU regulatory strategies in the
field of synthetic biology, examining how they have introduced and mixed different
forms of normativity. The new regulatory landscape raises questions related to the so
called “ethicisation of technoscience”, where soft law is increasingly framed through a
language of ethics and morality. In light of this, the contribution looks at the implications
this phenomenon could have for democratic principles within the process of rethinking
European governance.
