Abstract
The volume catalogues grammars of English published in Northern Italy, esp. the Milan area, in the 19th and early 20th Century. It also investigates the readership and circumstance of English teaching and learning in an age of change and turmoil. The analysis of methodology, forms of prescriptivism and innovation are manifest in the need for culture that characterizes the Italian educated classes.
