Abstract
The commission of historical writings in Late Antiquity evolved from otherwise unknown friends of the author to high representatives of the Church (deacons or bishops) or to sovereigns of the barbarian kingdoms: this was a noteworthy aspect of the social evolution of the historians from the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages.
