Abstract
This chapter focuses on issues of systemic violence and discrimination against women, as embedded in legal systems and perpetuated by social rules. To better discuss said mechanisms, the essay takes as starting points Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" and "For Conscience' Sake" and Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" (as well as its sequel and television adaptation). Different strategies of nonrecognition and objectification are thus discussed with respect to their social and legal iterations.
