Abstract
The scientific work of Enzo Balboni (former professor of constitutional law at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan) shows a preference for short cultural biographies, mostly of leading constitutional scholars and figures from the catholic-democratic area. Such a gallery represents not just individual portraits, but also a general panorama of a cultural and scientific movement and, as it also included a push to cultural and political action, a starting point to assess its successes and failures. Moreover, giving his own account of the scientific school to which he belonged, Balboni displays the cornerstones of his scientific thought: particularly with regard to autonomies – territorial, social etc. – and the role which they should have played (and were not always able to play) in order to give life to a substantive democracy.
