Abstract
Statistics confirm what common sense already acknowledges: family structures have changed significantly over the past forty years. The number of families has increased, while the average number of members per household has dropped from three to two. Single-person households—especially among young people and older adults—have doubled. New family types, such as single-parent families, have emerged, and the number of families with immigrant members is rising. These shifts may weaken the stability and role of family networks in promoting and supporting individual health.
