Abstract
The dedicatory inscription of the Lucera arena recalls the building of the amphitheatrum (...) et maceriam circum it: starting from this point, the autor suggests to identify a portion of the maceria in a long wall discovered southwards the building and parallel to its main axis. The comparison with other arenas - Libarna, Carsulae, Cividate Camuno, Avella - allows to outline a planimetric formula, the amphitheatres with fence, that seems to connote buildings with the cavea supported by earthen enbankments placed inside the city walls. Moreover, in the Lucera case it may be possible that the monumental gates found ahead the main entrances belonged to the maceria.
