Abstract
After a long period of sporadic and insignificant contacts between the Canossian domus and the city of Milan, relations intensified towards the end of the 11th century. In 1093 Milan and other Po Valley centers allied themselves with Matilda and her husband Guelph V, creating a great anti-imperial front, and from that time for more than a decade the Countess of Canossa exerted great influence on the Lombard metropolis. Through close relations with a number of men at the top of the urban ruling class, Matilda managed to influence the election of two archbishops (Anselm IV and Grossolano), who enjoyed her support and ensured the support of Milanese civil and ecclesiastical society for Popes Urban II and Paschal II.
