Abstract

In 'Avventure di Pinocchio', the theme of play is concentrated in chapters XXX-XXXI, in which four recurrences of the word "cuccagna" , cockaigne, are to be found. The paper shows the affinities between the popular myth of the Land of Cockaigne and the representation of the playful universe in the Land of Toys, through the analysis of forms and functions of play in the light of the categories indicated by Roger Caillois (agon, alea, mimicry, ilinx).
