Abstract

The use of perspective display devices (Eugeni, 2021) in television is a well-established phenomenon. Graphic overlays commonly seen in broadcasts often result from the remediation of various virtual interfaces from earlier or contemporary periods—among the most representative being on-screen displays, operating system GUIs, and video game HUDs—leading to multiple hybridizations and technical solutions.\r\n\r\nThe ongoing ludification of culture (Raessens, 2014) and television experience, both active—such as in the case of social TV—and passive—through the integration of game-derived elements into TV formats—raises important questions about how remediation practices involving perspective elements, frequently used for the graphical representation of textual information, contribute to the co-creation of media aesthetics. While there are existing analyses concerning specific models such as all-news channels and sports broadcasting, particularly regarding the relationship between video games and television (Stein, 2013), there remains a notable lack of specific studies addressing game shows.\r\n\r\nThis research aims to trace a potential genealogy of perspective devices within television game formats. More specifically, it will explore the relationship between the evolution of video game interfaces and graphic overlays in game shows, also examining the production and technological factors that influence their characteristics. Employing a grounded approach applied to a limited corpus, perspective devices will be categorized by function, on-screen positioning, and design style, thereby identifying analogies and recurring patterns.
