Abstract
This paper analyzes the motif of disease as an important motor of narrative development in The Exemplary Novels, the Cervantine collection published in Madrid in 1613 by Juan de la Cuesta. It will address the following short novels in particular: The Deceitful Marriage, The Licentiate Vidriera or Doctor Glass-Case, The Spanish-English Lady, and The Jealous Estramaduran.
