Abstract
Within the yearly Italian Report on Migrations (1999’s edition) realised by the ISMU Foundation – the main Italian scientific institution on migrations and interethnic cohabitation – this chapter focuses the attention on the problem of migrants’ discrimination in the Italian labour market. After the description of the various forms of legal discrimination, it focuses the attention on those forms emerging spontaneously from the labour market itself, depending on both employers’ expectations and migrants’ strategies. A special emphasis is than devoted to the gender dimension of these processes and to the problem of over-qualification involving a very high percentage of educated migrants.
The contribution is also available in the Italian version (see: “La discriminazione nel mercato del lavoro”, Quinto rapporto sulle migrazioni)
