Abstract
The composition of Leo IX's curia shows that this pope, traditionally identified as the first reforming pontiff animated by a spirit of independence from the empire, on the contrary sought to universalise the papacy through its imperialisation. In fact, his curia included people from the court of the Emperor Henry III, whose directives Leo IX often appears as a faithful executor.
